While I agree with your conclusion on American Exceptionalism, I'm less certain about your overall condemnation of nation building. I would cite Western Europe and Japan as examples. What made them different from Afghanistan? Perhaps the truth is captured in part in the moniker 'the graveyard of empires,' but I think there is more to it than that.
